Got some quotes on seat recovering . Ouch.
So to repair the current covers (basically new bases and some refurbished foam) about $600
To do full new leather covers and refurb the foam is going to be about $1700
To do the same but do a hybrid leather/canvas is about the same (less in material but more custom work)
If I bought the covers myself and had them install them it would be around $1500 (foam repair as well)
An extra $400 for seat heaters ($200 for switches, 200 for pads)
I’m still not sure if my idea of doing a canvas seat (vi ny l/leather sides and canvas centers) is a good idea, either in execution or concept, but it sounds neat.
This is going to be spendy.
I could also spend 600 on covers and do it myself, but I really don’t want to.
What would you do ?

How much for the Carharrt covers and call it good?
What are the long term plans? If you are keeping it forever then spend spend spend.

I heard good things about Iggee seat covers on ebay

I have a set of new leathers i’ve been meaning to install. Need to pull the seats, but that makes me want to put some floor insulation in as it gets hella toasty on long drives.

well there goes my seat replacement plans - ouch!

for an 80 series? You wont find better.

What about newer seats from a higher trim level or brand? Like Acura MDX, or similar?
![]() 07/23/2020 at 16:22 |

Dang, for those prices I would probably be looking at new seats rather than refurbing
![]() 07/23/2020 at 16:23 |

This is the top trim, and I really don’t want to mess with custom brackets for new seats (of finding them for that matter)

I can’t find new seats I like.

My brother had a Honda Civic and he went out and bought seats from an Acura Integra that popped right in. This is what I was thinking about for your vehicle, that there ought to be an upscale-badged version with superior seats that might pop right in.
I’d go the full monte and have the seats remade to my spec, fabric, foam, and all. You are putting so much thought into this, just go the distance.

You could find the LX450 seats, but its the same as finding decent replacement toyota seats. i.e. not really a thing.

Well in that case, I would probably go with
repairing
the current covers and adding the heating seats. Then again, I’m fairly cheap
![]() 07/23/2020 at 16:36 |

I wouldn’t go with covers, but I needed to find something in canvas for illustration. The fact that I can’t find canvas seats is mildly concerning.

I want to be cheap, I have other projects that will also be spendy.

I want/need foam work so covers are out.

no covers, I need foam work and I want to install seat heaters.

Does Katzkin make any for your cruiser?
![]() 07/23/2020 at 16:39 |

They do not. I found a place that makes nice leather covers for about $600. I’d still have to pay them to install and work the foam though, it would be $1200 minimum.

My Safari is a ‘97 and we stumbled onto a set of ‘05 seats and they’re holding up well and are surprisingly comfortable to sit in.
Whatever you decide to do, I’d be staying away from leather.

97. The only seats that are direct fit would be LX450. I could look into making a GX470 seat fit, but I don’t really love those seats. That’ s the main reason I’m going this route. My frames are worn and the seat is beat, but the adjustment is perfect and I like the fit.

Cry once, right? If your wallet can deal with it, do exactly what you want. If it were me in a vehicle I really like, I’d go with the full deal.
Of course it’s easy to spend someone else’s money. I’m trying to subscribe to the buy once, cry once philosophy for the Mustang.

Thoughts on canvas v leather?
![]() 07/23/2020 at 16:46 |

97 is old. I should know. Parts for my Safari are becoming noticeably more scarce. There was a sort of golden era there for a few years where I guess some dealerships surplussed out some parts and they were showing up on eBay. And perhaps predictably, suspension parts for the AWDs are much more available than for the 2WDs. I drain my engine oil every 5,000 miles and the next drain, when we get back home from Logan, will be 260,000.

Yup yup, as it usually goes. Maybe list out all of your projects and see where you can spend less and where you would prefer to spend more? Seats seem important since you will be in them so much. I believe this would be cost benefit analysis but I usually just go for pure spur of the moment decisions that end up biting me in the ass later

I think those Carhartt seat covers are pretty handsome...

I tend to stay OEM like, so I would probably go with leather. I can’t say I’ve had much experience with canvas as a seating material.

*Probably not good advice.

How about finding a wrecking yard? I once replaced the entire interior of my ‘96 Range Rover for $900. It all came out of a car that got wrecked early in life so everything in it was in terrific shape (except for the dash which was destr oyed by the passenger airbag ) .

I have! It can smell like Canvak too! I have the cover for the other seat but I’m waiting til the other stuff is done since the fire department put vinyl on it.

Cover or seat? Can't seem to find actual seats, just covers
![]() 07/23/2020 at 20:33 |

Idk, wouldn’t cloth be better? Fresh leather would be awesome, canvas looks really cheap and make the car look like a wartime vehicle. But fresh cloth could do wonders especially with winters and summer, but leather would absolutely modernize the interior of your car.
Friends mom, had the leather redone in her LX450, and it made the car look FRESH.

Yeah that is a perk
![]() 07/23/2020 at 21:09 |

Yeah I suspect that is true, I was just joking, all military seats back then were just a cover with laces underneath. For a canvas seat I would think it’s either a cover or a job for the upholstery shop. Nice custom covers aren’t bad and a lot less trouble, but if you need some bolster rebuilding you might as well let the pros do it, they always turn out better than I could ever do it.

Have you checked out ordering some seats from LSeat? I have seen a lot of 100 series guys use them and they really like them.
They even have 3rd row if you have it or use it.
A few guys have bought those and had someone install them for you, but a lot of them are installing them themselves, which I know you said you didn’t want to do.

I’ve seen those, but their price makes me wonder about them. They are half everybody else which raises eyebrows a little.

Buy once, cry once. As for leather vs. canvas ... IDK. I like the canvas idea, but I have no idea how it would actually turn out.

I’ve seen some people on the 100 groups on facebook that use them and have had good results, can’t speak from experience though, my factory seats are still in good shape. Which reminds me, I need to clean and treat
them soon.

purchased a set from a local club member that sold his 80 before installing. I don’t recall the brand, but i’ll see if there’s anything on the box.
